After having our fill of things volcanic, we headed down to Hilo, then hooked north and made a counter-clockwise arc around the island, stopping to take in the sights and drive down the older road.
We had to make a stop at an old tourist institution in Hilo before we left town: Hilo Hatties.

The Akaka waterfall is 442ft. high, and is featured in at least one Hollywood movie.
The Waipi'o overlook commands a fine view of the mouth of the valley below. There is a 25% grade single lane road that shouldn't be attempted in anything but a husky 4WD (AWD won't cut it).
And finally, the Kona Tiki, our favorite place to stay. No TV, but they do have wireless access. Right on the shore, with a pool that takes donations from the ocean. The sound of the surf is one of the perks.
The tsunami from a few years ago caused water damage to the lower floor, but otherwise the place survived.
Every morning the birds get fed, and they are at the ready at 6:50 am.
