Kauai Trip, February 2018

The second morning we watched the sunrise and talked with neighbors Keith and Mary about the Waimea Canyon and vicinity and they said an early start was best since the mist tended to form later in the day. It was clear blue skies, so we got rolling.

After the slippery, muddy and steep Pihea Vista hike I traded muddy shoes for sandals and we went to the lower Kalalau Overlook. It was still misty but there were restrooms and the viewing area was much larger.

I bought a Red Dirt t-shirt to commemorate the Pihea hike. The shirts actuall are dyed with the red dirt of the island. The basalt that came out of the volcanoes millions of years ago is rich in iron, so as it weathered it oxidized into the red, slippery mud found all over.
